Good morning! I am feeling very well rested this morning because I got 8 hours of sleep last night, which is unheard of for me during the week. I have been pondering lately how people do it - fit everything into their day, have time for relaxing, working out, cooking, and other necessities!
I've always been somewhat of an over-committer, I can't say no to anything and I always thought keeping busy kept me sane. Lately, though, I've been trying to tackle some health issues before they get too serious and to do so, I needed to add regular exercise into my schedule. I work full time. I am writing a dissertation. I'm on a grant-writing committee. I'm doing an internship. I have a dog. And a commute. I pride myself on being organized and efficient, but after reviewing an exercise app I've been using - Map My Fitness (www.mapmyfitness.com), I realized I do not exercise as much as I think I do! So, I had to slow down a bit on the dissertation, eat better, and get more sleep, just so I could have more time and energy to exercise. I gave myself a 5 Day Challenge - leave it to me to come up with a solo contest.
Within the next week, I have to work out for 60 minutes per day and get 8 hours of sleep per night for at least 5 days. This may not seem like much of a challenge, but it is for me. In a typical 24 hour cycle, I work 8 hours, have a 1 hour lunch period, commute a total of 2 hours, sleep for 6 hours on a good night, and for the remaining hours fit in household chores, exercise, homework, cooking, and taking care of the dog. It sounds like a ton of time, right? Well, it never really worked out that way and I think it's probably because I got sucked into the TV or something slightly more productive.
5 Day Challenge: Day 5 - I'm counting backwards, maybe it will make it easier?
Tuesday, May 5th.
By the time I got home from work, I had four hours until I had to be in bed at 10:00 with a TON of things to accomplish. Laundry, exercise, fold laundry and put it away, make dinner, prepare packages to mail, homework, and shower. I started off by throwing some clothes in the washer and doing the elliptical for 10 minutes. Then I ran upstairs and thawed chicken for dinner, fed Penny and let her outside during which I took the time to catch up on my Draw Something games :) Afterward I gathered up more laundry, made jello and changed into actual workout clothes. By then the washer was done so I took the rest of the laundry to the laundry room and threw the clothes into the dryer and did 20 more minutes of the elliptical. Came back upstairs, and seasoned the chicken, started the black beans and rice, fired up the grill and made a salad. By then the rice had 10 more minutes to cook so I put the chicken on the grill, took out the trash, and made lunch for today. The chicken and rice finished, so I plated the dinner (which also included grilled pineapple rings, yum!) and put the rest immediately into packages for lunches later this week and threw the dishes in the dishwasher, which cleaned up the kitchen. Dinner was delicious and I wanted to let it settle before I did my last 30 minutes of exercise, so I took that time to fold laundry, put it away, and start the dishwasher. I had a half hour left before I had to be in bed, so I set out for a walk with Penny. I went hard for the first .75 miles and then slowed it down for the last .75, so my legs were like jelly, but it felt great! I didn't have time for homework, and ended up in bed at 10:30 so I woke up at 6:30 this morning.
Perhaps I tried to pack in too much into four hours, and the preparation I did with lunches will help get some time back later this week. Four more days to go!
